What is stomach cancer?

Stomach cancer

The word stomach is used to refer to the area below the chest and above the pelvic region, howere this area is actually called the abdomen, the stomach is an organ that lies in the abdomen. People commonly refer to any pain or problem that occurs in the abdomen as a stomach pain or stomach problem. Stomach cancer is different from other cancers that affect the other parts of the digestive system like intestinal cancer or colon cancer.

Stomach cancer is a very slow developing cancer and may not show any signs of symptoms during the early stages of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer can affect the stomach lining and cal spread to nearby organs or even the lymph nodes. When the stomach cancer spreads to other parts of the body this cancerous stage is called metastatic stomach cancer.

Types of stomach cancers

There are four different types of cancers that affect the stomach. Types of stomach cancer are:

Adenocarcinoma

About 90% to 95% of all stomach cancer are adenocarcinomas. Adenocarcinoma stomach cancer affects the cells of the innermost lining of the stomach or mucosa.

Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a stomach cancer that affects the immune system tissue present in the stomach walls. This stomach cancer affects roughly 4% of all stomach cancers

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor is a rare type of stomach cancer that start in cells in the wall of the stomach called interstitial cells of Cajal.

Carcinoid tumor

Carcinoid tumor is a stomach tumor that affects the hormone-making cells of the stomach and affects 3% of all stomach cancer cases.

Causes of Stomach Cancer

The most common causes of stomach cancer are:

• Genetic disorders

• Incorrect diet

• Smoking

• Alcohol

• Helicobacter pylori bacteria in the stomach

Risk factors of Stomach cancer

Risk factors of stomach cancer or factors that increase the risk of getting stomach cancer are

• blood group A

• bacteria Helicobacter pylori in the stomach.

• Men between 40 and 60 years are at higher risk than women

Symptoms of stomach cancer

Stomach cancer may not show any symptoms during the early stages of cancer. The most common symptoms of stomach are

• Unexplained weight loss

• Feeling full or bloated after eating small quantities of food.

• heartburn

• vomiting

• Regurgitating undigested food long after eating

• Belching

• lump in the upper abdomen

• blood in the vomit

• tar-like, faeces

• Fatigue

• Anaemia.

If a person shows any of the above stomach cancer symptoms it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.

Diagnosis of stomach cancer

Diagnosis of stomach cancer is done using the following techniques:

• X-ray examination of the stomach.

• A gastroscopy of the inside of the stomach.

Treatment of stomach cancer

Once stomach cancer is diagnosed it is very important that treatment of stomach cancer is initiated immediately. Treatment of stomach cancer includes the administration of Chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
