What is mesothelioma cancer
Mesothelioma is the deadliest and very rare type of cancer. Development of cancerous growth in the mesothelium is mesothelioma cancer, which is the membrane surrounding the heart, abdomen and lungs. Even though the condition is fatal, it might take around 30 years to 40 years for development of mesothelioma. Eventually, there is no wonder that Mesothelioma is found majorly in elderly people. Surprisingly, more men are affected by this type of cancer than women. On the whole, it is an aggressive, stressful, painful and deadliest cancer.
Mesothelioma cancer is primarily classified into three types, namely pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural Mesothelioma refers to the cancerous growth in the mesothelium membrane surrounding the lungs, which is alternatively referred as mesothelioma lung cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma refers to the cancerous growth in the mesothelium membrane surrounding the stomach, which is also termed as abdominal mesothelioma. Pericardial Mesothelioma refers to the cancerous growth in the mesothelium membrane surrounding the heart.
Causes of mesothelioma:
When it is discussed about what causes mesothelioma, it is nothing but the polluted surrounding and environmental factors in the work space. The major aspect that causes mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. In spite of being a rare type of cancer, it is quite common in people who have constant or frequent or direct exposure to asbestos. It does not mean that direct asbestos exposure is the main culprit, whereas even indirect or unknowing exposure to asbestos also results in mesothelioma.
Direct exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma through direct and straight contact with the fibers of asbestos, asbestos mine workers, workers engaged in the construction field, ship builders, mechanics, etc. Indirect exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma through contact with anyone who has had a direct exposure to asbestos. For instance, family members of a ship builder who have an asbestos exposure can develop mesothelioma. Sometimes, the fibers of asbestos embedded into the cloths and hair and spread to others through contact.
It is not true that long term asbestos exposure alone cause mesothelioma, even exposing to asbestos for a very short period also result towards developing this type of cancer, the condition can be developed by anyone with direct exposure to asbestos just for a month or two. When the lungs are affected due to asbestos exposure, the condition is termed as asbestos lungs mesothelioma or asbestos cancer mesothelioma.
When it comes to symptoms of mesothelioma, shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing are the major mesothelioma signs.
Survival rate of Mesothelioma cancer:
Being a most fatal cancer of all types of cancer the survival rate of mesothelioma cancer is too low. People affected with mesothelioma cancer are expected to survive around 12 months to 18 months without proper medication or treatment. However, mesothelioma life expectancy can be increased to some extent by proper treatment.
After proper diagnosis and medical care, mesothelioma survival rate is expected around five years. Unfortunately, only 10% of the affected people have survival rate of mesothelioma after post diagnosis. Around 90% of affected people have an average life expectancy of four months to two years. Since the condition is fatal, mesothelioma statistics report states that it is quite difficult to estimate the mesothelioma life expectancy even based on the mesothelioma staging. Surgery is the common mesothelioma treatment provided for maximum number of patients.
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, where it is common in men than women. Due to gradual progression, it is likely to show out the symptoms only in the old people. It affects lungs, chest and abdomen with cancerous growth. Mesothelioma is diagnosed through biopsy. It is the deadliest cancer of all types of cancer with very low survival rate, eventually, treatment is offered based on the aggressiveness and staging.
