What is Lasik Eye surgery

There are two types of laser eye surgery to correct myopia, LASIK, laser in situ keratomileusis, and PRK, photorefractive keratectomy.  Many are still afraid of laser surgery and will live forever with glasses or contact lenses while others take advantage of new technology and embrace life without glasses or contact lenses

LASIK Eye Surgery

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is slightly more complicated than PRK.  It involves using a special knife to cut a flap of corneal tissue and remove the white lens and replace.  LASIK can be performed for all types of myopia.  LASIK is suitable for the repair of even the worst errors of refraction and has a quicker recovery time than PRK.  Most patients see well enough to drive home after surgery.  LASIK is performed since 1991, but has been approved by the FDA since 1999.  LASIK is a procedure more comfortable for the patient’s recovery time is very fast.

During LASIK surgery, aesthetic drops are placed in the eye and a speculum is placed in the eye for eye to remain open.  A suction plate is placed into the eye to hold it in place.  A device that faces the cornea is used to create a flap of uniform thickness.  The flap is lifted to reveal the inner layer of the cornea; the surgeon will reshape the desired level.  The flap is then floated into place on the cap of the.  Patients must wear protective goggles for four nights to provide security during sleep.  There is less scarring of the cornea with LASIK in the long term compared with PRK.

Research suggests that patients with LASIK surgery have much higher satisfaction levels than when they were using glasses, with them showing no sensitivity to light. Based on these figures, LASIK can be considered a good procedure.
