What is Atherosclerosis

Coronary Atherosclerosis disease is a condition that is caused due to fat deposits like cholesterol on the walls of arteries and affects the arterial blood vessels. This condition is also known as arteriosclerotic vascular disease or ASVD. In simple terms heart atherosclerosis is caused by deposition of plaque in the arteries or the blood vessels that carry the blood supply to different parts of human body. The plaque is formed by the various components in the blood like cholesterol, calcium, WBC, etc which cause constriction in the arteries and deform them leading to coronary atherosclerosis . What is atherosclerosis

Arterial atherosclerosis is a chronic vascular problem which happens due to many reasons like age and long term illness. Atherosclerosis disrupts the normal blood supply to the internal organs by causing narrowing of the blood vessels.

Atherosclerosis limits the supply of oxygenated blood to the various organs and can even cause heart attack or stroke. Arteries from many parts of the body can be affected by Atherosclerosis and includes arteries in the brain, heart, arms, pelvis, etc. Since the arteries of many parts of the body can get affected by atherosclerosis, there can be many complications arising. The cause of atherosclerosis is not known but certain risk factors associated with atherosclerosis has been identified. Very less physical activity and smoking are the major risk factors causing Atherosclerosis. Other factors are age, family history and fatty diet, etc.

Symptoms of atherosclerosis

Generally the people suffering from Atherosclerosis do not show any symptoms of atherosclerosis and the condition is diagnosed only after a stroke. Angiography and stress testing techniques are used to diagnose Atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis starts developing in early adolescence and keeps on progressing without showing any signs or symptoms of atherosclerosis. There have been a number of treatments developed to treat Atherosclerosis however prevention is most important in order to avoid the condition from developing.

Treatment of atherosclerosis

The major treatment for Atherosclerosis is lifestyle improvement. Medicines and surgical procedures form the other line of treatment of Atherosclerosis. The main purpose of the treatment of atherosclerosis is to stop the plaque from growing further and widening the passages in the clogged arteries. Lifestyle change plays an important part in the treatment of atherosclerosis. A healthy and balanced diet reduces blood pressure and cholesterol and also controls weight. Physical exercises are also necessary in improving the cholesterol levels and preventing the formation of plaque and helps prevent atherosclerosis. Smokers have to quit smoking if they want to get healthy, as it a major risk factor associated with Atherosclerosis.

Medicines are given as part of treatment of atherosclerosis in order to lower the level of plaque and to control the blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Medicines should be taken only after consulting a doctor and full and proper treatment should be taken. Self medications and home remedies should not be taken if you suffer from atherosclerosis. Surgeries are required in severe cases of atherosclerosis and angioplasty, coronary artery bypass grafting, carotid endarterectomy are some procedures done in case of Atherosclerosis to open the blockage.

Atherosclerosis is a condition where the complications may start even before diagnosis as the disease does not show symptoms at the early stage. After the diagnosis, the disease should not be ignored and proper treatment should be taken along with the changes in the lifestyle.
