Watery eyes in dogs is a condition that affect the dogs tear ducts.Dogs have eye discharge and overflow of tears very occasionally, which is quite normal. The tears are produced by tear gland constantly, where it is released into eyes. In every blink of eyes, tears are pushed out of the eyelids, which eventually run through nose. However, the tears get drained quickly into the lacrimal sac, which is located below the eyes. The fact behind the tears moving up to nose is to keep the nostril and nose with moisture.  Hence, tears in eyes of dogs with normal amount of tears are quite common in dogs. Unfortunately, in some cases many pet owners would have noticed that watery eyes in dogs, which is strange. The abnormal quantity of water running from eyes is termed as epiphora. Epiphora is the condition associated with other eye problems in dogs i.e watery eyes in dogs can lead towards several eye problems.  In most of the cases, over production of tears or inadequate draining of tears might lead towards watery eyes in dogs.

Causes of watery eyes in dogs:

There are many causes of watery eyes in dogs. The first thing the pet owners should know and understand is that many breeds are commonly exposed with watery eyes. Further, watery eyes are more common dogs with large eyes, for instance, Chihuahuas. In addition, breeds like Pomeranians, Poodle, Maltese, Pekingese, etc are also exposed to this excessive secretion of water. Any disease in the eyes or eye disorders in dogs also causes of watery eyes in dogs includes the following:

  • Conjunctivitis in dogs, characterised by red eyes and red watery eyes in dogs.
  • Blepharatis – Swollen eyelids
  • Inflamed  Keratitis or cornea
  • Abrasions  or scratches or wounds near and around eyes
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Any infection in eyes

Further, Uveitis in dogs, which refers to swollen uvea, also causes watery eyes in dogs.

Besides medical condition associated with eyes, there are few other causes of watery eyes in dogs. It includes the irritation due to foreign objects. For instance, when the eyes are exposed with dust or debris, automatically tears are overflowed for dislodging the foreign object and to get rid of irritation. Further, watery eyes in dogs also occur due to excessive hair growth, food allergies, etc.

Symptoms of watery eyes in dogs:

Pet owners are able to detect the condition quite easily with abnormal amount of overflow of tears from the eyes of the dogs. Other symptoms include the following:

  • Constant flow of tears
  • Drier eye discharge appear on the edges of the eyelids
  • Redness
  • Inflammation of eyelids
  • Cloudy eyes
  • Marks of tear flow in the face

Treatment of watery eyes in dogs:

In most cases, watery eyes in dogs are suppressed automatically in a few days without any specific treatment. However, treatment is required in case of severe condition characterised with high quantity of overflow of water and when the symptoms of watery eyes in dogs are developed with symptoms of other diseases or health conditions. Hence, getting appropriate treatment from the veterinarian is quite imperative. The treatment of watery eyes in dogs is provided on the basis of the underlying causes and condition. Sometimes, just by few medicines and drugs and keeping the pets away from any allergic or dusty area, the condition can be treated. In chronic condition, surgery is required to cure the condition.
