Liver is one of the important organs in humans, where the same is applicable to dogs. Similarly, just like humans experience liver failure, it is quite common in dogs. Liver failure in dogs refers to the condition where the major part of the organ is damaged. Liver failure in dogs can be caused due to various reasons. However, liver failure in dogs is not caused due to alcohol. The major cause of liver failure in dogs is found to be bacterial and viral infections. The infections never directly affect the liver. They affect the other parts of the body and then lodge themselves in the liver affecting the functions of liver, eventually leading towards liver failure. Liver failure in the initial stages is too mild and in maximum cases, it is mistaken as some other disease. Hence, it is quite important to get to know the symptoms of liver failure in dogs.

Early signs of liver failure in dogs:

Early signs of liver failure in dogs also appear to be the symptoms of several medical conditions and disorders in dogs. Hence, it is quite difficult to diagnose the liver failure in dogs in the initial stages. There are few cases in which, there are no apparent sings of liver failure in dogs in early stages. The warning signs generally develop only when a considerable portion of liver is damaged. Most common and early warning signs of liver failure in dogs include the following:

  • Eating disorder
  • Loss of weight
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weakness and weariness
  • Increased thirst and urination

When the condition and the damages to the liver aggravate, the symptoms of liver failure in dogs become severe. Severe symptoms of liver failure in dogs include the following:

Change in Stool Colour: Liver failure results in inability of liver in excreting the bile, which lead towards changing the colour of the stool in dogs. The stool turns into darker due to bile.

Jaundice: Jaundice is the major liver disease, which is the main symptom of liver failure in dogs Improper liver functioning obviously result in jaundice, which in turn lead towards liver disease. When the dogs affected by jaundice, the colour of the dogs turns yellow and the white portions of the eyes of the dogs turns yellow. Jaundice is an evident symptom of liver failure in dogs.

Bleeding: Dogs that are likely to be affected by the liver failure bleed easily. Bleeding is caused due to inability of the liver in producing the required quantity of coagulant protein. Increased bleeding in dogs results in the most severe stage.

In addition to these symptoms, there are few uncommon yet severe symptoms of liver failure in dogs, as follows:

  • Severe itching caused due to bile deposited in the skin
  • Severe pain in the abdomen, which is caused due to swollen or enlarged liver.
  • Accumulation of toxins results in confused state of mind as well mental uncertainty.
  • Fluctuation in the levels of blood sugar
  • Depression
  • Seizures

Dogs with liver failure and associated symptoms will not be happy or normal. By close observation of the activities, it is quite possible to detect the condition earlier before it become too late. When you detect any of the signs mentioned above, ensure to take your pet immediately to vet clinic for medical attention.
