What is diarrhoea in dogs?

Similar to humans, dogs are prone to diarrhea. Vomiting and Diarrhea in dogs are seen very frequently in dogs. Diarrhea is one of the most common illnesses experienced in dogs. Diarrhea in dogs can be attributed to the unique nature of the dogs. Dogs are prone to lick anything found on the floor or street. In most cases, Diarrhea in dogs is very mild and gets treated automatically. Diarrhea in dogs is closely accompanied by vomiting. Further, it can be suppressed by following and implementing a few safety procedures. However, sometimes it is associated with some health disorders and complicated conditions, which result in chronic diarrhea. What is actually diarrhea in dogs?

Causes of diarrhea in dogs

When the dogs are likely to pass more volume of unformed stool at very frequent intervals, which sounds and seems unusual is called as Diarrhea in Dogs. It is not a health condition or illness by itself. Alternatively, Diarrhea in dogs is found to be a disorder associated as a major symptom of several health complications, in particulars disorders associated with gastro intestines and digestive system. Even though Diarrhea in dogs is not actually a complicated issue, when left untreated, the condition turn out to be fatal causing dehydration. As the condition is quite obvious in almost all dogs with very less percentage of exemption, it is better to know about the condition in detail.

When we talk about causes of diarrhea in dogs, the condition is not caused due to single reason. However, main cause of diarrhea is nothing but the food habits. It is very common that the digestive system of dogs could not able perform its duty when it is ingested with some unusual food. Contaminated food, processed foods, decomposed foods, change in diet, foods with toxic or chemical substances, etc are left undigested and lead towards causing diarrhea in dogs. Other causes of Diarrhea in dogs include microbial infections and parasites infections. For instance, dogs get infected by most common bacteria coccidian and giardia when it licks the floor or eat the garbage, resulting in diarrhea. The hidden danger in diarrhea caused due to microbial infection is, the infection is associated with the high risk of damaging liver and kidney in dogs.

Symptoms of diarrhoea in dogs

The condition is characterized by several symptoms and includes the following.

  • Vomiting
  • Increased body temperature
  • Increased urination
  • Loss of weight and appetite
  • Change in stool colour like orange stool, green stool, etc and watery stool
  • Foul smelled stool
  • Weariness and lethargy
  • Bloody stool
  • Increased thirst
  • Depressed state

Treatment of diarrhoea in dogs

When it comes to treatment of Diarrhea in dogs, leaving the dog with empty stomach for a day is the best remedy, as fasting is better cure for Diarrhea in dogs. There are several effective home remedies for Diarrhea in dogs and are as follows.

  • Allow the pets to take complete rest and feed with limited portion of foods easy in digestion
  • Give boiled rice or boiled meat or boiled eggs
  • Pumpkin for Diarrhea in dogs is a great choice of home remedy. Pumpkin can effectively reduce the condition and you can give pumpkin puree to the pets.
  • When the condition is accompanied with vomiting, pepto bismol is effective in treating both.
  • Ensure to feed the pets with more amount of water to prevent dehydration

When the pets are not found with symptoms of increased thirst and urination along with watery stool, it requires no treatment and it subsides automatically. Bloody Diarrhea in dogs or discharge of stool with intolerable smell requires immediate medical attention.
