Dermatitis in Dogs

Dermatitis refers to skin infection. Skin infection is a common problem found in dogs. Dermatitis in dogs is mainly caused due to unhealthy and unhygienic surroundings. Dermatitis in dogs not only caused due to unhygienic atmosphere and there are several reasons, where the dogs develop dermatitis. It is also caused due to fungal and bacterial infections. In some dogs, any allergic condition or food allergy also reflect as skin infection.

Dermatitis in dogs is classified into several types. Each type of skin infection is caused due to different factors. Let us see the different types of Dermatitis in Dogs as follows.

Acute Moist Dermatitis in Dogs: This is a bacterial infection resulting in moist dermatitis. The bacterial infection is caused when the dogs involve in some scratching activity due to bug bites or dog fleas. Excessive scratching lead towards small cuts or wounds in the dogs, through which bacteria enters the body of the dogs and cause infection. It is characterised by painful red spots with moisture on the dog’s skin.

Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs: This type of infection is alternatively termed as Canine atopy, which is characterized by excessive or extreme itching in dogs. Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs are the most common type of dermatitis affecting the dogs. Further, it is quite common in puppies and dogs below the age of five years. Exposure and allergy to toxic condition are the main causes of Dermatitis in Dogs.

Contact Dermatitis in dogs: As the infection is indicated by the name, it is caused due to direct physical contact with certain allergic or infectious elements like some kinds of salt or acid. Further, exposure to certain substances made of strong chemicals like fertilizers and bleaches also result in skin infection. Skin infection is reflected as itching and redness in the dog’s skin.

Seborrheic Dermatitis in Dogs: This type of skin infection can be referred as the skin disorder in dogs, where the dogs affected by this condition experience the infection on the neck, face, ears and scalps. The condition is characterised by swelling, rapid hair loss, redness and itching. Seborrheic Dermatitis in Dogs is caused due to yeast infection, where the dog becomes allergic to certain foods.

Causes of Dermatitis in dogs:

As stated above, dermatitis in dogs is not occurred just due to single reason and there are several causes attributed with the infection. They are as follows:

  • Allergic condition or food allergy
  • Nutritional imbalance or malnutrition
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Any adverse reaction to certain drugs
  • Inability to react for toxic substances
  • Excessive or constant sun exposure
  • Sunburn
  • Skin cancer in dogs
  • Itching or itchy skin

Symptoms of Dermatitis in Dogs:

By close observation, pet owners can detect the symptoms of Dermatitis in Dogs. Moreover, dogs are generally affected by dermatitis mainly during summer and hot days. Based on the type of dermatitis, signs and symptoms vary. However, there are few common symptoms of dermatitis in dogs. It includes the following:

  • Scratching
  • Rubbing on the floors
  • Redness of skin and red spots
  • Swelling
  • Unusual itching
  • Foul odour in dogs

Treatment of Dermatitis in Dogs:

By diagnosing the underlying cause and the type of dermatitis, appropriate treatment for dermatitis in dogs is executed. The pet owners should discuss with the veterinarians about the hygienic atmosphere, food habits, and life style of the dogs to help in assessing the actual cause of the infection. Accordingly, appropriate injections, medications and drugs will be provided to cure dermatitis in dogs. However, medical treatment for dermatitis in dogs is not sufficient. Further, it is the responsibility of the pet owners to provide healthy and hygienic atmosphere and food to the dogs.
