What is Vertigo in Dogs
Vertigo is the term used to refer the sense of giddiness or dizziness. It can be expressed as a feeling experienced by anyone as if being falling or about to fall. Vertigo is also common in dogs and the vertigo in dogs refers to the same condition where the dogs feel like falling or light-headedness. It is also referred as vestibular syndrome or vestibular disease. It is a rare type of disease in dogs. However, the symptoms of vertigo in dogs can obviously lead towards severe health complications and disorders in dogs, where the condition should not be considered mild. Vertigo in dogs is caused by several reasons. Vertigo in dogs leads towards vomiting and nausea. Sometimes, the dogs tend to lose balance. The condition ranges from mild to severe dizziness. The causes of vertigo in dogs is idiopathic, which means that there the actual causes are not known.
Causes of vertigo in dogs:
As mentioned earlier, the condition is idiopathic. Fortunately, there are some additional causes associated with the disease. The main thing to be understood is that, vertigo in dogs is closely associated with some complex problems in dogs. For instance, digestive problems and liver problems are found to the major underlying causes of vertigo in dogs, where any problems in liver as well the digestive system are not a simple health complication in dogs.
Infection in inner ears:
Vertigo in dogs is greatly associated with the infections in the inner ears of the dogs. The common signs of ear infections in dogs are likely to be the signs of vertigo in dogs. Signs of inner ear infection include frequent head shaking, irritation, whining, etc. Ear infection and the vertigo in dogs caused due to ear infection can be treated by home remedies by feeding the organic food. Further, antibiotics can be provided to treat the infection.
Other causes of vertigo in dogs include the following:
- Malnutrition i.e lack of nutrition
- Environmental pollution
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals
- Any problems associated with nervous system. For instance, neurological issues like tumor.
In addition to above mentioned health problems, there is few other facts causes vertigo in dogs. One of the uncommon causes of vertigo in dogs is low blood pressure in dogs. Further, dogs with cancerous growth and heart disease also suffer from vertigo. In rare cases, insect bites and some allergens also lead towards vertigo in dogs.
Signs of Vertigo in dogs:
The signs and symptoms of vertigo in dogs are generally associated with the causes of vertigo in dogs. Common signs include the following:
- Difficulty in walking like faltering walking
- Head shaking
- Nausea and vomiting
- Inability in dogs to walk or stand
- Unusual movement of eyes
Treatment of vertigo in dogs:
Since the condition is associated with several causes, treatment of vertigo in dogs are provided to eliminate the underlying the causes. For instance, if the condition is caused due to indigestion, dietary changes are prescribed. Similarly, if the liver disease results in vertigo in dogs, treatment is offered to cure the disease in liver.
As prevention is always better than cure, by keeping the dog in a healthy and hygienic atmosphere and feeding with nutritious food, vertigo in dogs can be prevented.
