Worms in cats

All pets including cats in some stages are affected by worms and many a times re-infection is also there if this is not treated well. Worms in cats can cause a lot of health problems in cats. Lets look at worms in cats and cat worm treatment here.

Types of worms affecting Cats

There are two types of worms in cats, these two parasitic worms are most common in cats are tapeworms and roundworms. Round worms in cats are white in color and can be 15 cms long in size. They are round in shape comparing to tapeworms that are flat. Tapeworms in cats can grow upto 4 times that of round worms. Both of these worms in cat’s infect the cats intestines and some other worms also affect named whipworms & hookworms. These parasitic worms live in cats lungs, stomach, bladder, heart.

Treatment of worms in cat

Now a day’s many effective treatments for worms in cats are available to kill worms. These include pastes, tablets, powders or liquids. Animal’s doctor or vet can advice better which is best for one’s cat. These worms in cats are very common as it is presumed that all cats and kittens are always affected by worms and fleas. Treatment for worms in cats should be done on regular basis of every 2 weeks till the 15th week. Older cats can be treated for worms every 3 months. Vet can give better idea about this basis on the condition and health of the cat and treatment of worms in cats.

Treatment of round worms in cat

Worms are passed from matured cats to their kittens at the time of birth or while feeding milk. These roundworms grow generally in the intestine of younger cats which lay hundreds of eggs that passes out in faeces of the cat. Immunity is developed in the older cats against worms and thus they don’t pass eggs but this is not the same with all. Some of tapeworm eggs survive for months and also some can survive for years in the soil as they need to be in environment for some time before getting into another host. They get hosted directly (if cat eats them) or indirectly (eaten by rodent and then by cat). Immature worms lives in the tissues of infected cat that develops again if it is a female cat at the time of pregnancy. Treatment of worms in cats against these roundworms kills all the adult worms in the intestine of cat but this effect does not remain long. Re-infection is possible so as mention above regular treatment is necessary.

Treatment of Tapeworms in cat

Tapeworms grow continuously in ribbon of segments that are packed with eggs individually that are hosted by their head till the intestinal wall of the cat. These segments break off slowly & then are passed in faeces. This appears like rice grains and dry up attached with cat’s fur. Many a times tapeworms moves to another cat with the help of fleas. Fleas pick up infection from cat’s faeces in environment and another cat’s are infected by swallowing flea during hunt. Different products are available for worming against tapeworms on regular basis. Vats can provide suitable medication according the conditions of cats.

Prevention from worms in cats

Other necessary measures can also help for stopping worms to be passed to other cats or from cats to people then applying worming on cats on regular basis.

• Cleaning of faeces & burry them or putting them inside a sealed bag in dustbin is recommended if cat uses garden as a toilet.

• Symptoms should be checked for signs of fleas & treatment should be done on regular basis using products recommended by vet.

• Smaller kids can make cats infected with worm’s eggs as they insert dirty fingers & other objects into the mount of cat.
